Mapei specification takes flight at London City Airport

Over 2,500 sq. metres of porcelain tiles have been installed using Mapei’s ceramic products for the West Pier extension at London City Airport. The project was undertaken over a 25 week period, and completed in May 2017.

The project specification was created by Mapei’s specification team, located at the dedicated Specification Centre in Clerkenwell, London, together with the installers Tiletec. Mapei’s Topcem fast track screed was laid across the whole area at a thickness of 70 to 120mm, before the porcelain tiles were installed using Mapei’s Keraquick S1 with Latex Plus.

Topcem is Mapei’s special hydraulic binder for normal setting, fast drying, and shrinkage-controlled screeds. It is suitable for bonded and unbonded screeds which, when mixed with suitable aggregates and water, harden within 24 hours and are completely dry, regardless of thickness, in four days.

Mapei’s Keraquick S1 rapid set flexible adhesive was specified to install the 600 by 300mm tiles. The high performance cementitious adhesive was mixed with Mapei’s Latex Plus admixture to improve the elasticity characteristics to C2FT S2. Mapei’s Ultracolor Plus grout in shade 112 (medium grey) was used to complete the West Pier extension project.

Tiletec installed the tiling to the front of house pier corridor, walkway, nine gate rooms, staircases, and back of house toilets, with a total contract value approaching £400,000.
