Custom-made entrance matting for City of Glasgow College

COBA FLOORING is the specialist commercial flooring division of COBA Europe Ltd. The UK based entrance matting manufacturer supplies a range of custom-manufactured aluminium systems, as well as interlocking PVC/carpet entrance tile systems alongside other flooring products for a wide variety of environments.

COBA regularly works with specifiers and flooring contractors operating throughout the UK, while also offering its own installation service if required. COBA’s BIM-listed entrance matting systems have been ‘the product of choice’ for some very prestigious new-build and refurbishment projects, such as the Riverside Campus at City of Glasgow College, the manufacturer says.

City of Glasgow College is one of Scotland’s largest colleges. Its Riverside Campus, completed in 2015, represented phase one of a £228 million ‘supercampus’ development in Glasgow. The building was designed by Michael Laird Architects and Reiach & Hall Architects, with construction undertaken by main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine.

The main Riverside Campus building is an eight storey, modern construction providing views across the city of Glasgow, and features a light and airy atrium. Riverside Campus includes classrooms and workshops equipped with the latest technology and has a pioneering Marine Skills Centre. It is home to some 3000 marine and engineering students. The Campus also has an 11-storey student accommodation block and landscaped recreation areas.

There was also a second phase of this development project – City Campus – which was completed in 2016.

The main atrium reception entrance at Riverside Campus is a busy ‘high footfall’ area, given the volume of students, staff and other visitors who pass through the doors on a daily basis. The entrance area was designed to take this footfall into consideration with primary and secondary entrance zones.

COBA says this same attention to detail also stretched to the specification of the entrance matting which needed to be sufficiently durable to withstand the pedestrian traffic, while also accommodating the circular revolving door systems and providing sufficient walk-off length.

There was also a slightly smaller side entrance which required entrance matting. The flooring contractor, Veitchi Flooring, approached COBA Flooring for an entrance matting solution.

Plan.a aluminium entrance matting, manufactured by COBA Flooring, was reportedly specified primarily based on the product’s credentials for durability and aesthetic appeal. The matting in the main entrance area spanned some 10.7m wide x 2.7m deep and 7m wide x 3.2m deep.

Plan.a entrance matting was subsequently custom-made to order to the college’s specifications. The college also opted to have its ‘City of Glasgow College’ logo incorporated into the design, taking advantage of COBA’s ability to integrate an inlaid bespoke logomat.

After the project was completed, Fergal McCauley, head of facilities management for the City of Glasgow College, said: ‘We have been pleased with the entrance matting system, and the logo is an eye-catching addition for visitors as they enter the building. It effectively helps to trap moisture and dirt on entry, reducing cleaning requirements within the main Atrium area.’

COBA Flooring’s business manager, Danielle Cooke says: This remains a great example of how Plan.a can be used effectively and creatively, without compromising on performance and functionality. It is the perfect investment for this type of building, and other commercial entrances.’

Plan.a has fast become COBA Flooring’s ‘flagship’ aluminium entrance matting product, the company says, and is the ideal ‘front of house’ choice for many busy commercial buildings requiring a smart, functional high-performance solution. Custom-manufactured to order in the UK, Plan.a has been specified for, and installed in, a wide range of buildings, from office locations, to hotels, leisure centres, shopping centres and schools. It is just one of a collection of options in COBA’s ‘Plan’ range of aluminium systems, and is available in a range of colours and configurations.

There is a choice of carpet inserts. Either Alba Premium Nylon Carpet in anthracite, blue, grey or brown or Needlepunch Polypropylene Carpet in charcoal or grey. PVC scraper or Nylon brush inserts are also available, and it is possible to combine, or alternate a variety of inserts within the finished system. COBA’s most recent update to the list of options available in Plan.a includes carpet inserts in the Precision Loop and Precision Nib range giving a choice of some 33 colours. Custom logomats can also be integrated into the design, said to utilise COBA’s specialist precision inlaying techniques for a premium finish, or traditional screen printing processes as required.

Plan.a entrance matting can be specified in two heights, low profile or standard profile, with the option of a ‘closed’ or ‘open’ surface dependent on the preferred methods of cleaning. It is designed to be installed in recessed matwells.

The company continues, saying it has experienced internal and external sales teams to support the precise needs of architects, specifiers, flooring contractors and main contractors. COBA offers free onsite surveys, an installation service, free product samples as well as technical data sheets. It has also developed a mobile app called Entrance Architect which it describes as a ‘handy tool’ for product selection and other resources which can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
